Rama seeks "salvation" from friends, after Macron turns his eyes to
Meetings with Macron and the Turkish ambassador

As the protest enters its 25th day and criticism from the media close to Erdogan has increased, the prime minister appears to be strengthening contacts with his international allies...

Albania is entering the 25th day of civil protest, while the pressure on the government seems to be increasing day by day. In this climate of political tension, Edi Rama is appearing increasingly active on the diplomatic front.

Just a day earlier, the prime minister traveled to France, where he met with President Emmanuel Macron. The visit was interpreted as an attempt to show that international support for him remains strong, despite the domestic crisis and protests that have filled the streets of Tirana for weeks.

But the diplomatic moves did not stop there.

Today, Rama received in a courtesy visit the new Ambassador of Turkey to Tirana, B. Ceyhun Erciyes. According to the official announcement of the Turkish embassy, during the meeting, the excellent level of relations between the two countries was appreciated and the will to further deepen cooperation was reaffirmed, especially in the economic field.

Ambassador Erciyes also expressed his satisfaction with Rama's upcoming visit to Ankara on the occasion of the NATO Summit.

On the surface, it's a routine diplomatic meeting. But the timing of it makes it more interesting.

For years, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been one of Edi Rama's most important international allies. Whenever the Albanian prime minister has faced political, economic or diplomatic difficulties, the relationship with Ankara has been one of his strongest points of support.

But in recent weeks something seems to have changed.

The Turkish government-affiliated media has significantly increased its criticism of Rama. Initially, they reported extensively on the protests in Albania. Then came the articles about Jared Kushner's projects in Sazan and Zvërnec. And the climax was reached with the analysis of the major Turkish newspaper "Daily Sabah", which directly linked the dissatisfaction in Albania to Rama's rapprochement with Israel.

In that analysis, Rama's visit to the Knesset and his statements in support of Israel were placed at the center of criticism. The newspaper suggested that Tirana's increasingly strong alignment with Tel Aviv is not viewed favorably in Ankara, especially at a time when relations between Turkey and Israel are at one of the lowest points in recent years.

Precisely for this reason, today's meeting with the new Turkish ambassador takes on a broader political significance.

At a time when protests continue, while Turkish media is being much more critical of him than before, Rama seems to be trying to maintain balance with two of his most important international partners: Macron in the West and Erdogan in the East.

If the meeting with the French president was read as a signal to Brussels and Paris, the reception of the Turkish ambassador seems like a reminder that ties with Ankara still remain an important part of his political strategy.

And as protesters continue to demand his removal for the 25th day in a row, the prime minister appears to be seeking support not only at home, but also from his allies abroad. /Pamphlet
