The special parliamentary committee for the Administrative-Territorial Reform held a tense meeting in Tirana, as the July 15 deadline for submitting the report to the Assembly approaches.

The debates began after opposition members requested that the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg be included in the process.

During the discussions, DP MP Ina Zhupa also touched on the issue of the protest, which brought a reaction from the mayor of Gramsh, Besion Ajazi, who was invited to the hearing. He requested that the discussion focus on the topic for which the committee was convened.

"Honorable colleagues, I have no intention of asking you what I will say, nor of pleasing you for what I am saying. You can wait. The lack of patience is reflected in that square filled with citizens. You have a local government that today has no voice. If you ask them yourself, they will tell you that they have no idea what plans they have for their municipality. You will decide what the procedure is... stay there, I will hold the seat as a guest", said Zhupa.

After this statement, the socialist co-chair of the commission, Arbjan Mazniku, reacted.

" Don't tell any elected official to 'stay and keep your seat.' He got more votes than you," said Mazniku.

At the end of the meeting, Mazniku insisted that the commission respect the set deadline and submit the report to the Assembly by July 15. According to him, after the report is submitted, the Assembly will be the one to decide on further steps regarding the administrative-territorial reform.
