Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted to the debate on development in protected areas, citing as an example the Ria Formosa model in Portugal, which he described as a success story of coexistence between nature protection and economic development.
In a post on social media, Rama emphasized that the Ria Formosa lagoon, one of the most important ecosystems in Europe, was transformed into an engine of economic development for the Algarve region through investments in high-value tourism and not through mass tourism.
According to him, Portugal chose to invest in elite destinations such as Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, attracting billions of euros of private investment, creating thousands of jobs and significantly increasing tourism revenues, without harming the biodiversity of the area.
"The question is not whether nature and development can coexist. The question is whether we have the vision, knowledge and will to make them coexist," Rama said.
The Prime Minister underlines that the Portuguese example proves that wealth is created when nature becomes part of development and development becomes its ally.
At the end of the reaction, Rama expressed optimism about the prospects of Albanian tourism, stating that "the reborn tourist Albania will soon enter the league of world tourism champions" and that the country will be internationally recognized as an important tourist destination.
