The self-proclaimed independent MP gives the first public signal in support of the protesters, a day after splitting from the Socialist Party.
Just one day after announcing her departure from the Socialist Party and transitioning to an independent MP, Marjana Koçeku has given the first public signal that she is siding with the protesters.
The Shkodra MP, known as "Neomalsorja", has posted on social media a flamingo, the symbol that has been identified with the anti-government protests for days. Although without any accompanying comment, the post appears to be a political message and an expression of support for the protest movement.
The reaction comes at a difficult moment for the Socialist Party, as the country is experiencing the 16th day of protests today, while signs of discontent have begun to appear openly within the Socialist Party. Koçek herself announced her departure from the Socialist group a day earlier, stating that the decision was related to her personal beliefs and values.
The publication of the protest symbol is seen by many observers as a further step in her distancing herself from the majority. If the resignation from the Socialist Party was considered a political blow to Prime Minister Edi Rama, today's post seems to reinforce the perception that the MP is positioning herself alongside the protesters' cause.
So far, Koçek has not made any direct statements in support of the protests, nor has she clarified the meaning of her post. However, the choice of the flamingo, the symbol that has accompanied the marches and mobilizations of recent days, can hardly be considered a coincidence in the current political climate.
But it seems that there is a division among commentators regarding her act. There are many who criticize her, demanding that she resign as an MP altogether. Some accuse her of the failure of the student protest in 2018. A large part congratulates her and welcomes her.
