Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, held a meeting this Monday at the Presidency of the Parliament with MEP Andrey Kovatchev, shadow rapporteur for Albania in the European Parliament.

During the conversation, the two officials discussed the progress of Albania's European integration process, the challenges related to reforms and recent political developments in the country. An important part of the meeting was also dedicated to the civic protest, which has been ongoing for 16 days.

Tabaku said that the protests do not only represent opposition to a specific project or decision, but reflect broader dissatisfaction with the way of governance in recent years. According to her, for 13 years, legal mechanisms have been built that have favored narrow interests, negatively affecting the functioning of institutions and free competition.

The Democratic MP singled out the Strategic Investment Law and the amendments to the Law on Protected Areas as examples of this model. She emphasized that the opposition has consistently opposed these initiatives through parliamentary amendments, public statements, and communication with European institutions, raising concerns about their impact on the rule of law, transparency, and the protection of the public interest.

According to Tabaku, a large part of the criticism expressed today by citizens coincides with concerns raised earlier by European partners, who have requested the review of legislation that creates preferential treatment, violates competition and weakens institutional control mechanisms.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Tabaku emphasized that European integration should not be seen only as a technical process of opening negotiation chapters, but as a process that requires strengthening institutions, respecting the rule of law, and increasing citizens' trust in democracy and equality before the law.

"With my friend Andrey Kovatchev and the deputies of the new Bulgarian parliament, I discussed European integration and civic protest.

"Citizens demand change in a system that has captured the state and weakened institutions. European integration means more than chapters and conferences; it means European standards, the rule of law and opportunities for the majority," writes Tabaku.
