From Basha, Alibeaj and Shehi, to Majko, Kodheli and Kryemadhi, who are the 79 current MPs who will hand over their mandate in September?

From Basha, Alibeaj and Shehi, to Majko, Kodheli and Kryemadhi, who are the 79

Here are the "veterans" who need to pack their bags...

Today, the counting of preferential votes from the Diaspora has officially concluded, thus closing the electoral process and creating a clear picture of the new composition of the Albanian Parliament for the 2025-2029 mandate.

But what immediately stands out is the long list of well-known names who will no longer be part of Parliament – a full 79 current MPs have been left out. Some were not included in the lists at all and some failed to secure the necessary votes on May 11.

This group includes important figures in Albanian politics over the years; people who have held ministerial positions, party leaders or key institutional functions. Among them are Pandeli Majko, one of the symbolic figures of the Socialist Party and former prime minister; Mimi Kodheli, former Minister of Defense; Lulzim Basha, former leader of the Democratic Party and candidate for prime minister; and Enkelejd Alibeaj, former leader of the Democratic Party parliamentary group.

Among the names that have fallen "prey to the selective vote" are Dashamir Shehi, one of the critical and independent voices in the Assembly; Blerina Gjylameti, one of the prominent figures of the Socialist Party in Tirana; and Ermonela Felaj, Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and former Deputy Minister of Justice. Also left outside the Parliament are Orjola Pampuri, Petrit Doda, Ferdinand Xhaferaj, Edmond Spaho, Kreshnik Çollaku, Helidon Bushati, Dhurata Çupi, Etilda Gjonaj, Tatiana Piro, Nasip Naço and many others from all political spectrums.

This massive “deletion” of 79 MPs comes as a result of a combination of two factors: changes in the Electoral Code that favored candidates with preferential votes and the increasingly strong campaign for the renewal of the political elite. The vote from the Diaspora, for the first time with real influence, has also played a role in the redistribution of mandates, empowering new names or candidates with broad support abroad./ Pamphlet
