French President Emmanuel Macron, at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, was asked about the war in Ukraine and the peace agreement.
He said the ceasefire proposal is an American proposal and should be respected, but Putin's response has not been positive. Macron expressed confidence that US President Donald Trump will react to Putin's cynicism.
"I want to start by saying support for the people of Ukraine and I want to say to the leaders that we have never been naive. The ceasefire proposals, which I remember were an American initiative, have not been respected. The massive war has been going on since 2022.
The American president came with an ambition to make peace. It was an important statement and the US should be respected for this. We reacted by saying that we need a strong and lasting peace. And we have done very intensive work for this. And then it was also approved by the president of Ukraine. We are waiting for Russia's response. Last Saturday in Kiev, we were with Prime Minister Starmer and Zelensky and we called Trump to tell him that we are together for the ceasefire. Putin's proposal was "let's meet in Istanbul". On Sunday, Zelensky gave his consent, what do we have today, nothing? I think Trump will react because the ceasefire proposal is American proposals and they must be respected, we will react so that peace comes", he said.
