In an interview with the German magazine ZEITmagazine, Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been in power since 2013, also spoke about the proposal he was made to head the Ministry of Culture in 1998.

The socialist leader also recounted the conversation he had with his mother, saying that she asked him not to accept the position.

'The phone rang and the Prime Minister's voice was heard: "Mr. Minister of Culture, do you want to stay or leave again?"

“I’m staying,” I replied. “Do you need some time to think?” he asked. “No,” I replied, “because if I want to, I’ll leave again!” It was that simple. When everyone left, I asked my mother, “Who do you think will be Minister of Culture tomorrow?” She replied, “I don’t care at all.” When I asked her, “What if it’s me, Mom?” she replied, “It’s been a long day, you’re tired, your sense of humor is ruined – go to bed.” But when she realized I was serious, she started crying. My parents always wanted me to stay out of politics. “What’s worse,” she said through tears, “for your father to die, or for you to become a minister?”

I said: “What should I do now, Mom?” And she replied: “Go immediately to the Prime Minister’s house and tell him that you were involved in your father’s death, take it back.” I said it was a shame, I couldn’t do it. “If you don’t dare to resign now,” she added, “you will remain trapped in this political mess for the rest of your life,” he said.
