Rama and his wife on the plane

In a long interview with "Zeit Magazin", Prime Minister Edi Rama has given answers about how he sees power and his personal life. Taking sips of water and often ignoring some high-pitched questions, Rama described power as a "wild beast", which can deform a person's character if balance is not maintained.

" Power is a very dangerous animal. A wild beast, always there, ready to devour a person's insides. It can tempt you to fire someone just because you don't like them. Or to retaliate against an unpleasant message. That's how you become someone else ," Rama said.

He revealed some of his personal rules for staying "normal," such as not using state personnel in his private life, private travel without business class, and refusing to allow subordinates to carry his luggage.

But the most personal part of the interview was related to family, where Rama said that his “toughest opposition” is his wife. “ At home I have the strongest opposition I have ever experienced. After work, when I lie down to watch a movie, her questions start. She is an economist, she knows numbers, data, facts. There are times when I have to stop the movie several times. If it continues until the knockout, I have to beg her for mercy, ” Rama confessed, describing this as an “internal control” that helps him stay grounded.

“If you have such an opponent at home and listen to them, you can become invincible outside your four walls… even King of Albania,” the prime minister said with humor.

Excerpt from the interview

Every now and then, Edi Rama takes a sip from a bottle of water. He doesn't like to be interrupted when he's talking. He ignores some questions by simply speaking loudly, as if trying to drown out the background noise. He slides lower and lower in his chair, and after an hour and a half, he almost lies down.

-Power is a wild animal. That's how you once formulated one of your thoughts.

Yes, power is a very dangerous animal. A wild beast. It is always there, ready to devour a person's insides. Or to deform them. This beast carries many temptations within itself. For example: You can immediately fire someone you don't like, or even take revenge on them. You fight the messenger instead of dealing with an unpleasant message. Suppose you don't get along with a coworker. You can fire him - quite easily.

Maybe they will resist. Then you can ask: “Who is this boy’s father”? And you learn that the father is a police officer. “Fire him,” you can order. Again, easy enough. And so you become someone else.

-What are your conclusions?

You always have to remember where you come from. I never let my people carry my luggage. When I travel privately, I don't fly business class. My wife drives her own car. At home, we don't have any government employees. I have set up the first museum for the gifts I receive, which belong to the state and not to the person in the Prime Minister's office.

Big little things, staying as normal as possible under the skin.

-Is there anyone who hears about such matters?

Some people think that I have won many elections because my opposition is very weak. Those people have no idea. Because at home, I have the toughest opposition I have ever experienced.

She's waiting for me when I get home from work in the evening – my wife. I eat something, lie on the couch, choose a movie to relax.

And after the first ten minutes of the film, question time begins, from couch to couch.

My wife is an economist, she works for international organizations, she knows her stuff. She knows numbers, data, facts. The questions keep coming, so I have to press the pause button on the movie several times.

It's really intense. If my wife continues until the knockout, it will be well after midnight and I will have to beg her for mercy. I can assure you: If you have such opposition at home and listen to them, you will become invincible outside your four walls. Then you can also become King of Albania!
