Protests against the political class have been taking place in Albania for 24 days, with Prime Minister Edi Rama being asked to resign. The protesters' demands are non-negotiable, while Prime Minister Edi Rama has refused to resign, and has even challenged thousands of citizens who have been protesting on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard since May 31.
The political grouping European Democratic Party led by François Bayrou, which is part of the Renew Europe centrist group in the European Parliament, has reacted in favor of the protests. The EDP represents the centrist grouping in European politics, while promoting humanism, environmentalism, education, and the strengthening of the EU's democratic institutions.
In a statement, EDP emphasizes that the protesters' demand is clear, a democratic renewal is required, rejecting the recycling of political elites.
"Thursday evening in Tirana, the 24th day of protests, conveyed a message that no political force can ignore. The protesters' calls were addressed to Prime Minister Edi Rama and his government, but also to the opposition, which many citizens no longer consider a credible alternative.
The message of the protest goes beyond criticism of a single leader. It reflects opposition to a political model that, according to the protesters, has failed to ensure prosperity, transparency, and public trust.
"In this context, the demand coming from the streets is for a democratic renewal, not for a new agreement between political elites that many citizens consider worn out. The protests are expressing the demand for a new phase in the country's political life," a statement published on social media said.
