Member of the National Council of the Democratic Party, Ilir Alimehmeti, has stated that the civic protest, which has entered its 28th day, is conveying two clear messages for Albanian politics: dissatisfaction with the way of governance and the demand for a change in the political elites.
Invited to the "Terminal" show on A2 CNN, Alimehmeti said that these signals should be seriously analyzed by all political parties, including the Democratic Party.
" Two elements of the protest must be analyzed. The first element is the great dissatisfaction with the form of government. Winning mandates does not give you a mandate to abuse. The second element is the desire for a change of generations or political elites. This requires reflection from each party ," said Alimehmeti.
He emphasized that the Democratic Party is currently in an important organizational process, where new governing bodies are expected to be elected, hinting that citizens' demands may also influence this process.
" It is a coincidence that we in the DP are in the days when we will elect the Presidency and all our governing bodies. We have it on Wednesday and I believe it will be reflected ," he declared.
Alimehmeti added that the protest expanded significantly after the Democratic Party's National Assembly and that the delay in the constitution of the National Council is also related to the need to better understand the message that citizens are giving.
" The protest grew in early June, while we had the National Assembly on May 30. The National Council has not yet been constituted and I think this delay came about due to the need to reflect on what is being demanded by the people. I believe and hope that this reflection will come. If it is not reflected, then it is a very big mistake ," said Alimehmeti.
