"Without speeches, without media and near my wife's grave",
Rexhep Qosja

Rexhep Qosja left a written will, which specifies the manner of burial and the limits of public presence at the ceremony. The document is dated April 30, 2016 and is addressed to his nephew, Valjet, to whom he assigns responsibility for its implementation.

In the text, Qosja requests burial without religious rituals. Along the same lines, he requests the exclusion of any official presence, arguing for it with his critical stances towards the authorities during his lifetime.

Qosja also determines the composition of the ceremony. He requests that the funeral be conducted only by family members. He excludes speeches, the presence of the media, and the laying of flowers. He specifies the location of the grave near his wife, Shpresa.

Rexhep Qosja's Testament:

To my nephew Valjet,
who took care of my life and whom
I ask to also take care of my burial.

Since I have lived believing in scientific thought, in the spiritual upliftment, and in the social progress that it makes possible, I want to be buried without religious ritual.

Since I have lived and thought, for the most part, expressing critical views towards rulers and their powers, I want to be buried without any official presence.

I want my funeral to be held only by my family.

Since I have taken care to live simply, I also want to be buried simply: without speeches, without media, without flowers, near the grave of my wife Shpresa.

Die peacefully.

Since I have dedicated my life, my intellectual creativity and my political activity to the freedom, unity and democratic well-being of the Albanian people, I can say that I am not indebted to either the state of Albania or Kosovo, their present or future. If Kosovo is indebted to me, this will be something that future historians of Albanian literature, culture and political thought will be able to say.

I don't think I die without any sin.

Since I grew up, lived and worked in political and social conditions that were very harsh even after the liberation of Kosovo and the creation of its state, I cannot say that my expressed disagreements were always free from some harsher judgments and assessments than they should have been. However, I await my burial convinced that I lived, created and acted by doing good, preaching goodness and spreading humanity.

I wrote these thoughts while being aware and clear-minded.

Your grandfather, Valjet
