Fatos Cenaj, who was shot in the head several times on Sunday morning in Italy, worked for several years as a guard at the Berat detention center. After he was fired, he went to live with his sons in Italy.
The 58-year-old is the brother-in-law of former Berat prison director Arif Dervishi. When he was suspended from duty, Dervishi was also dismissed, having been appointed by the SMI at the time.
In Italy, he lived in a province of Padua. Preliminary information indicates that there was a momentary conflict in a bar. Then they ambushed him on the street and shot him.
Cenaj passed away the day before after being in serious condition in a Padova hospital. The incident occurred on June 8 in the morning, on Casoni Basse Street. The 58-year-old was riding his tricycle to work when, just a few kilometers from his home, he was shot twice in the back of the head.
Italian authorities are continuing their investigation, but so far there have been no witnesses and no security cameras have been found to help investigators. The only known detail is that the murder took place in an agricultural area of Fontaniva, where a passerby who was passing by saw a person lying in a canal and thought he had had a seizure or had fainted.
