From America to Sicily, the Albanian mafia is creating its own family!

In the US, they tried to be the sixth family, how the Albanian mafia is trying to replace Cosa Nostra

Italian investigative journalist Giuseppe Bascietto has stated that the Albanian mafia has become a structured and expansionist reality in southeastern Italy, especially in southeastern Sicily.

According to him, in the last fifteen years, the criminal scheme in this region has changed radically, and this is neither a folkloric phenomenon nor simply a generational change, but a profound realignment of the mafia balances.

" The Albanian mafia is not invading Sicily, it is doing something more intelligent: it is integrating itself into existing structures, exploiting the gaps, pauses and divisions within Cosa Nostra ," Bascietto said on the "UnoMattina" show on RAI.

In the Vittoria–Gela–Comiso area, relations are no longer as they once were, when Albanians were seen as “manovalanza”, a workforce used by local structures. Today we have a clear functional collaboration: Cosa Nostra provides local contacts and control over the territory, while Albanian groups control the market, bringing in drugs, logistics and execution.

But Bascietto points out that in areas where Cosa Nostra is weak or fragmented, like in the city of Vittoria, Albanians don’t seek alliances – they simply take control. And according to him, “Vittoria today speaks Albanian as far as the mafia is concerned – because almost the entire drug market is in Albanian hands.”

Meanwhile in Palermo, where Cosa Nostra remains strong, Albanian structures have not managed to penetrate significantly.

The discussion also mentioned the attempt of Albanian groups to enter the US. According to him, Albanians tried to become the "sixth family", but were excluded by strange alliances that also included the Calabrians, who at the time were suppliers of "workers" for the five historical mafia families in the US.

" They really tried, they wanted to become the sixth family of New York, but they were stopped. They were stopped by a mixture of strange alliances that were formed in the United States. Because to prevent their entry as the sixth family, there were also, in part, the Calabrians, who at that time supplied "workers" to the five New York families that had suffered serious blows from judicial investigations in the US. And this message tells us a second thing. It tells us that we should not underestimate Cosa Nostra. Because they say: Cosa Nostra, whatever it is, is still present in the territory. Today there is no longer a dome, there is no united organization like there was in the time of Riina, Matteo Messina Denaro or Provenzano, but it exists. There are still Cosa Nostra families that do not want the attention of the law enforcement agencies to be drawn to that territory, especially in the southeast of Sicily, " he said.

Bascietto's statements reflect a silent but dangerous transformation, where the Albanian mafia does not try to imitate Cosa Nostra, but to replace it where the latter has weakened. This "invisible" growth of it, through the integration and control of drug markets, constitutes a new criminal phenomenon that the Italian authorities are following with increased concern. / Prepared by "Pamphlet"
