The Spanish National Police have arrested a 33-year-old Albanian in Madrid, as the suspected perpetrator of the spectacular robbery of 2,200 pieces of jewelry worth over one million euros, carried out during a power outage on April 28, at the 'Plaza Norte 2' shopping center, in San Sebastián de los Reyes.
The thief took advantage of a power outage, which rendered the electronic locks of the José Luis jewelry store useless, to execute a carefully planned and surgically executed robbery.
According to 'El Mundo', the thief entered the roof of the shopping center and made several cuts in the asphalt roof directly above the jewelry store. From there, he removed the plaster panels until he reached a service path, which connected different stores.
After creating more holes, he managed to get into the back room of the store, where he hid until a power outage allowed him freedom of movement. Armed with only a screwdriver, he opened the display cases one by one without breaking them and took everything inside, including white gold and diamond jewelry.
Initial investigations identified the vehicle the suspect used to reach the shopping mall: a used car that he abandoned the day after the robbery before fleeing the country. The investigation revealed that the suspect frequently moved within and outside Spain, always using different identities to avoid detection.
Finally, on October 22, he was found back in Spain and arrested for burglary.
At the time of his arrest, he was carrying nearly 3,000 euros in cash, the origin of which he could not explain, and one of the stolen jewels was hanging around his neck as a trophy.
