Hundreds of kilograms of cocaine have been seized on a Turkish tanker in an unusual drug trafficking case in Belgium.
The ship "Scot Bremen" (built in 2003) was diverted to Zeebrugge after arriving from Pecem, Brazil, en route to Ghent.
The boat was stopped after a police patrol spotted eight men launching a rigid-hulled inflatable boat from the shore at the Blankenberge marina in the evening. The daily Het Nieuësblad reported that the group was suspected of being drug traffickers.
The Maltese-flagged tanker was taken to Berth 205 at the Westerhoofd terminal, where the search began.
"We can confirm the arrests in Blankenberge and the discovery of drugs on the oil tanker in Zeebrugge, separately. But we cannot yet comment on whether the two cases are linked. The ongoing investigation will show this," the West Flanders public prosecutor's office told Flows.
Meanwhile, the 8 arrested are 4 Belgians, 3 Dutch and 1 Albanian.
The operator of Scot Tanker in Istanbul has been contacted for comment. The vessel remains anchored in Zeebrugge.
