Albania is the country with the highest share of diesel cars in first-time passenger vehicle registrations for 2024, in stark contrast to the European trend that is rapidly moving away from this type of engine for environmental reasons.

Eurostat data, in its latest publication on Transport in the European Union, shows that 66.2% of passenger vehicles registered for the first time in 2024 in the country were diesel-powered, a much higher share than the European Union average of 14.9%. The second place behind us is Moldova, with 47% and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 34.5%. In other countries in the region, diesel car registrations accounted for less than 30% of the total (there is no information for Kosovo and North Macedonia).

In total, 85.7 thousand passenger vehicles were registered for the first time in Albania in 2024, of which 56.7 thousand were diesel. Gasoline accounted for 17.6% of the vehicles, with a share that is among the lowest in Europe, and alternative energy 12.9%. Electric cars accounted for only 3.3% of the total.

The trend is quite different from what is happening in Europe. Eurostat data shows that the transition towards electric vehicles and less polluting alternatives is accelerating in Europe. In 2024, fully electric cars accounted for more than half of new registrations in Denmark (51.3%) and over a third in Malta, Sweden and the Netherlands. At the EU level, their share reached 13.5% of new registrations.

Europe is moving away from oil

According to Eurostat, a time series based on available data for all years from 2014 to 2024 for 20 EU countries shows how the engine power types of new passenger cars have changed.

In these countries, which accounted for 93% of new passenger cars in the EU in 2024, the number of diesel vehicles (including hybrids) fell by 67%, while the number of petrol vehicles (including hybrids) increased by 60%.

For alternative powertrains, there were 45 times more registrations of fully electric battery cars in 2024 than in 2014, representing 13.9% and 0.3% of all new car registrations respectively. Registrations of new vehicles using other alternative fuels in 2024 were 13% higher than in 2014.

This transformation is directly linked to the EU's climate objectives. Transport accounts for around 27% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, so European policies aim for an increasingly emission-free transport system.

The gap between Albania and the EU

While Europe is investing in electromobility, Albania remains at a much earlier stage of the transition. The dominance of diesel cars is linked to several structural factors, such as a market dominated by used car imports; lower initial costs of diesel vehicles; lack of developed infrastructure for electric charging; limited fiscal policies to promote green vehicles.

However, the European trend is expected to gradually affect the region's markets. EU regulations, increasing emission standards and expanding charging infrastructure will make the dominance of diesel vehicles increasingly difficult in the medium term. / Monitor
