Why didn't Sali Berisha impose quarantine before the prime minister's
Sali Berisha /

The escalating protests are not aimed at overthrowing Rama, but at returning Berisha to the international table as a political factor...

The harsh rhetoric and Molotov cocktails protests are not simply a confrontation with the government, but a political signal to the US and the EU. Sali Berisha does not seek radical overthrow, but a communication channel and a return as an indispensable actor in international negotiations. He avoids a tent protest or total escalation, because he does not aim for a path of no return, but to sit at the table as a factor. Meanwhile, the Western chancelleries seem to be looking for another opposition alternative, leaving Berisha between the role of actor and the ambition to become a factor.

Before the protest on the second Tuesday of February took place, rumors spread that there would be a non-return of opposition protesters. Various forms began to be discussed, from the 2017 tent to a hunger strike, or even other radical methods.

In reality, none of this happened, except for a severe escalation with pyrotechnics. The debate from last night until today has focused on how much the majority will condemn the violence and how much the opposition will increase the doses of escalation.

No word on the plan for a protest that could lead to another phase in relations between the country's political parties.

Sali Berisha has no problem at all starting a tent protest, that is, a lockdown like the one Adriatik Lapaj did for a month. And Berisha has the opportunities and structures to make this protest more active and reactive, in a viral 'reality show' on television and social networks.

But Berisha does not take this step, since in reality he has no problem negotiating with Edi Rama, which would force the latter through a radical protest. More than with Rama, Berisha seeks a channel of communication with the internationals.

So far, the US and the EU, which move through SPAK, have coordinated with the opposition regarding the denunciations and materials filed with the special prosecutor's office. But this action has bypassed Sali Berisha and has not stopped his criminal troubles. Although the doctor has important channels of influence, mainly in Athens, as is the case of Irena Gjoka.

The internationals have bypassed the leader of the Democratic Party, so the latter wants to make it known that there are no negotiations with the opposition without going through his office. For this reason, his agenda will be harsh and unpredictable.

In fact, it is not that unpredictable. Berisha knows how to maintain limits so as not to be considered outside the red lines. His confinement in a tent or some other radical form would turn the negotiation into a question of how to get out of there. But Berisha does not want this type of negotiation; he wants to sit at the table, just as his rival Edi Rama sits with the internationals.

Then, the doctor has shown that he is flexible enough, or intransigent enough to appear as a factor.

Protests with Molotov cocktails are a code with which Sali Berisha does not speak to Edi Rama, but to the internationals, namely the USA regarding Non Grata, as well as Germany, which has ignored him even worse.

Berisha is aiming, with this game of violence, to stop any opposition factor from negotiating on his behalf, the DP or even other opposition parties.

Sali Berisha is appearing as an arsonist who is ready to burn until the moment he is asked to be a firefighter, and at that moment he will do so immediately and in an exemplary manner.

So far, no one considers Sali Berisha a factor, even though he is actually the most influential character. But his relevance does not have the necessary weight to move him from the status of an actor to that of a factor.

Could this happen? It has happened several times in history. But now it seems that Western chancelleries do not want to give him this opportunity, with which he has burned the country several times.

They are simply looking, patiently, for an anti-Rama within the opposition, in SPAK or even in other parts of society./ Pamphlet
