From Janullatos to Joan: The Orthodox Church of Albania between the nation and Athens
Thirty years after the arrival of Anastas Janullatos, the Albanian church continues to confront the legacy of the political concession that linked it to Athens and the tension between faith, nation, and Greek influence.
The existence of Anastas Janullatos at the head of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania has been a political concession to Athens from the beginning.
An unwritten agreement, made in the name of stability, which in fact has cost Albania, the church itself, the Orthodox community and the entire Albanian society a lot.
Instead of bringing spiritual unity, it created a political dependence on Greece, overshadowing the national mission of Albanian Orthodoxy.
For thirty years, the Albanian political elite, from left to right, has been silent about this compromise.
No one has dared to open the debate on the fact that the Albanian church was placed under the leadership of a cleric sent from Athens, contrary to the spirit of Autocephaly that Theofan Noli baptized with his holy Albanian.
The church dragged itself between religion and politics, while the Albanian Orthodox felt more like a subject of Greek influence than as part of a church that preaches in their own language.
Janullatos often used his position as a diplomatic tool for Greece, blessing politicians and figures who still held the flags of “Vorio Epirus”.
This historical wound; a priest who preached in Greek, without knowing a word of Albanian, who met and blessed extremists who cursed Albania, disparaged autocephaly and destroyed the sincere faith of many Albanian Orthodox.
Now that Fatmir Pelushi, known by the church name Joani, is at the head of the Church, the situation had to change.
Joani was presented as a return to the national fold, as a cleric who spoke Albanian and appeared in public as a fan, as a man who aimed to restore the spirit of Noli.
But his actions have shown that Janullatos' legacy has not been extinguished, it has only been masked with a patriotic vocabulary for public consumption.
Joan's meeting with Fredi Beleri, symbol of the "Vorio Epirus" agenda and today a Greek MEP, was a clear sign that the old politics of dependency have not ended.
Beleri, convicted of vote buying, who accuses Albania of "oppression of the Greek minority", was treated as a spiritual friend by the new head of the Albanian church.
A gesture that betrays his word for "national return" and turns Joan into a prop of Greek politics in Tirana.
This is not about faith, but about the national dignity of the Albanian church, which cannot be led by people who give political legitimacy to the "Trojan horses."
John may have spiritual obligations to his predecessor, who is expected to be declared a "saint," but he cannot continue to do politics in the service of Greece, while talking about patriotism.
If he wants to faithfully follow the path of Janullatos, let him openly admit it: that he is an implementer of the orders of his spiritual leader, not a follower of Noli and Luaras.
Because otherwise, every "nationalist" vow of his is a new mask of the old Greek revanchism, which the Albanian Orthodox have known well and have rejected with pain.
The time for religious and political concessions is over.
The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania belongs neither to Athens nor to Tirana, but to the Albanian believers who pray in their own language.
If Fatmir Pelushi continues to be part of the entourage of “Vorio Epiri”, history will treat him the same way as those who poisoned Petro Luarasi and banned the word of God in Albanian.
And in this case, he will have the same fate and the same curse. /Pamphlet

Kisha jonë ortodokse nuk ka përse të ketë komplekse në lidhje me Greqinë apo greqizmat Pikërisht sepse është autoqefale dhe kombëtare shqiptare.
