Elections in North Macedonia, which Albanian party is favored; what do the polls

Citizens of North Macedonia are voting today in the first round of local elections for mayors and municipal councilors in all 80 municipalities, plus the City of Skopje.

Local elections are also being held in the Albanian municipalities of North Macedonia. According to polls, the VMRO-DPMNE party is expected to receive around 26.7 percent of the vote, the largest opposition party SDSM 11.1 percent, followed by the Albanian coalition National Alliance for Integration (AKI) led by the Democratic Union for Integration with 9.9 percent, and finally the VLEN coalition, VMRO-DPMNE's government partner, with 7.5 percent.

The poll also showed a high percentage of undecided voters: 10 percent, while 12.4 percent of respondents refused to say who they would vote for. These are the eighth local elections since the country declared independence in 1991. Citizens in North Macedonia are voting for the second time in less than two years, after presidential and parliamentary elections were held last year in April and May.

According to the electoral list of the State Election Commission, 1,832,415 citizens are eligible to vote in the local elections. There are a total of 3,480 polling stations throughout the country.

Voting centers open at 07:00 and close at 19:00, after which the counting of votes begins and the announcement of the first results.

In this first round of elections, the new compositions of the municipal councils must be elected, while the mayor will be considered elected if he has won 50 percent plus one vote, provided that at least one third of the voters registered on the electoral list of the respective municipality have voted.
