Hurricane 'Melissa' does not stop, over 120 thousand people evacuated

About 120,000 people continue to stay in evacuation centers or temporary accommodations in Cuba after powerful Hurricane Melissa hit the eastern part of the island.

The figure was announced during a meeting of the National Defense Council, the country's highest crisis and disaster management body, which is chaired by President Miguel Díaz-Canel. The council is meeting daily to assess the situation and coordinate aid.

Hurricane Melissa passed the eastern tip of Cuba last Wednesday, staying over the area for seven hours as a Category 3 hurricane (out of 5) on the Saffir–Simpson scale.

Winds reached up to 200 kilometers per hour, while rainfall reached up to 400 millimeters in some regions, causing flooding and significant damage to infrastructure and housing.

Cuban authorities are working to restore electricity, rebuild housing, and provide basic supplies to affected communities.
