A powerful explosion occurred on Monday morning, November 3, in the historic center of Rome.
Shortly after 11:00 am, part of the Torre dei Conti, the medieval monument that dominates the Imperial Forum area, suddenly collapsed while reconstruction work was underway.
Eleven workers were working in the tower at the time of the collapse. One of them, 66-year-old Romanian Octay Stroici, was trapped under the rubble for nearly 11 hours before rescuers were able to pull him out and he was taken to hospital in critical condition.
But the Romanian worker died after arriving at the hospital, as a result of the injuries he sustained.
Another worker, 64 years old, suffered facial injuries and was transported to San Giovanni Hospital.
Three others, trapped under scaffolding and rubble, were rescued by firefighters using ladders.
