Keir Starmer leaves the leadership of the Labour Party with a low level of public support, after a period accompanied by criticism for a lack of political clarity and frequent changes of positions.
According to an analysis published by The Guardian, many British voters perceived Starmer as a politician who failed to create a clear vision for the country's leadership. In interviews conducted in various parts of England, citizens expressed dissatisfaction with him, with the most cited reason being that he "did not deliver on his promises."
Starmer's popularity has fallen sharply during his term. In an Ipsos poll, he recorded an approval rating of -66 points, the lowest level ever recorded for a British prime minister.
Among the decisions that sparked strong reactions was a plan to limit winter heating allowances for pensioners, introduced just weeks after Labour came to power. Criticism was further fuelled by controversies over gifts and benefits received by senior party figures, including Starmer.
His government also faced accusations of constant policy changes, as it modified or withdrew positions on several issues, including social reforms, farmer taxation, and immigration policies.
Analysts estimate that one of Starmer's main challenges was the inability to convince voters that his government could bring the promised change after years of economic and political crises in Britain.
Although his government took measures such as the gradual nationalization of the railways, strengthening tenants' rights, increasing funding for the health system, and rapprochement with the European Union, these achievements failed to change the broader public perception.
According to analysis by The Guardian, in an era where voters are looking for leaders with a strong profile and clear messages, Starmer failed to create a lasting connection with the public, which contributed to his declining support and his departure from the leadership of the Labour Party.
