Andy Burnham, the newly elected Labour Party MP for Makerfield, could be Britain's new prime minister, following the departure of Keir Starmer.

He was mayor of Greater Manchester for the past nine years and has previously held a seat in Parliament, representing Leigh from 2001 to 2017.

He has run twice to become leader of the Labour Party, in 2010 and 2015, and lost both times.

Meanwhile, a few minutes ago, Keir Starmer resigned as Prime Minister of Great Britain and as leader of the Labour Party.

The news was announced through a statement at "10 Downing Street", where Starmer said that "I will put the country I love first."

Keir Starmer said he accepts "with dignity and respect" the decision that he is not the most suitable person to lead the Labour Party in the next general election.

"The question my party is now asking is whether I am the best person to lead it into the next general election. I have listened to my parliamentary group's answer to that question and I accept that answer with understanding and respect," Starmer said.

He emphasized that every decision he has made while leading the party has centered on the country's interests.

"Every decision I have made has been to put the country I love first. For this reason, I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," he said.

Starmer also announced that he had informed King Charles III of his decision during a conversation held this morning.

According to his statement, the resignation comes after he admitted that he no longer enjoys the necessary support within the parliamentary group to lead the party in the upcoming elections.

He said that when he took over the leadership of Labor he found a party "politically, financially and morally bankrupt", but that he managed to restore confidence in the economy, defense and national security, as well as combat anti-Semitism within the party.

Starmer described entering Downing Street in 2024 as "the proudest moment of my life," emphasizing that he had entered politics to change the lives of millions of people for the better.
