President Volodymyr Zelensky declared today that Ukraine should become part of the European Union before 2030, emphasizing that his country deserves full and equal participation in the European family.
Speaking from the Pokrovsk region in eastern Ukraine during a speech to EU leaders at the Union Summit, Zelensky said that Ukraine has proven in practice that it belongs to Europe and should be treated as an equal with others.
According to him, US President Donald Trump supports Ukraine's efforts to join the EU. Zelensky also called on the United States to remain open to supplying Kiev with long-range weapons to strengthen its defenses against Russian aggression.
At the same time, the Ukrainian president called for new Western sanctions against Russia, including on the natural gas and nuclear energy sectors. Meanwhile, a new European Commission report assesses that Ukraine has made sufficient progress on the path to EU membership, opening the possibility for negotiations to enter a new phase.
"The enlargement process is moving faster than in the last 15 years," says the report published today, which analyzes the progress of the ten candidate countries.
Zelensky welcomed the Commission's report, stressing that it shows Kiev's determination to become part of the European Union.
" We expect decisive action from the EU to overcome artificial obstacles towards a strong and united Europe ," he wrote on the X network.
