US President Donald Trump has said he doesn't care about the midterm elections, but they could still be an important trump card for Iran. Trump said Iran thinks the upcoming midterm elections give them influence over the US, but according to the US president they are wrong.
"They thought they were going to wait longer for me. You know, we're going to wait longer than him, he has the midterm elections. I don't care about the midterm elections ," Trump declared.
Trump's grip on the Republican Party is unquestionable at this point. But that doesn't translate smoothly into victory in those November elections, and many Republicans are even worried that Trump's reputation will bring down the party.
-What are mid-term elections?
Midterm elections take place in the middle of each four-year presidential term and offer voters across the country a chance to decide who controls Congress.
Congress is made up of two chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Currently, Trump's Republicans control both chambers of parliament, of course, along with the White House. So Trump is all-powerful. But the midterm elections could change that if Republicans lose one or even both chambers to Democrats. And that could be what Iran is counting on.
