A gun attack has been reported in Moscow against a senior Russian official directly involved in operations against Ukraine, at a stage when the possibility of a new round of talks between the two sides is being discussed.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning in a northern area of the Russian capital.
The target of the assassination was General Vladimir Alekseyev, deputy commander of the GRU, the military intelligence service of the Russian Federation.
According to local media reports, Alekseyev was in his apartment when he was shot in the back. He survived the attack, while authorities have not provided details on his condition. Preliminary investigations indicate that the perpetrator of the attack fled the scene and has not yet been identified.
Russian authorities have not clarified whether the assassination was carried out by a single person or an organized structure. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
General Alekseyev hails from the Vinnytsia region in central Ukraine and is considered a problematic figure in Kiev, where he has been branded a traitor.
He served alongside pro-Russian forces in the occupied territories.
In Moscow, Alekseyev is known as one of the officials who participated in gathering intelligence information to prepare for the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He has also been involved in talks between President Vladimir Putin and the Wagner mercenary structure during the summer 2023 crisis. The assassination of Alekseyev adds to the tension at a delicate moment for relations between Russia and Ukraine, while political and military developments remain unclear.
