US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping held talks in South Korea on the war in Ukraine. They agreed to ease trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.
The White House chief told reporters that he would lower the tariff on China to 10 percent.
"As you know, I have put a 20 percent tariff on China because of the fentanyl that's coming in, which is a big tariff. And based on his statements today, I'm reducing it to 10 percent. So it's now 10 percent instead of 20 percent, and it's going to go into effect immediately," he said.
The focus of the discussions was also rare earth minerals. He stated that this issue has been resolved and that there are no more obstacles from China.
"All the rare earth issues have been resolved, so on a global level... This was a global issue, not just the US. There are no more obstacles from China," Trump said.
Trump added that he spoke with President Xi about the war in Ukraine, and together with Jinping, we will try to achieve something regarding peace.
"We're both going to work together to see if we can achieve something. We agree that the sides are, you know, deadlocked, fighting and sometimes you have to let them fight, but he's going to help us and we're going to work together for Ukraine," he declared.
Ahead of the meeting, Ukraine and its allies urged Trump to pressure Xi Jinping to stop supporting Russia. The meeting came a week after Washington announced sanctions on two major Russian oil companies.
