Five more people have been arrested in connection with the theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Earlier in the day, French television BFM reported the arrest of a third person in the Paris suburbs on Wednesday evening, who is suspected of being present at the scene on October 19, when the spectacular robbery took place.
Two other people arrested over the weekend have admitted their involvement in the events, according to a statement from the Paris prosecutor made yesterday.
Officials from the French capital's prosecutor's office have not yet commented on these reports.
The incident happened at around 9:30 a.m., shortly after the museum opened to visitors. The thieves used a stolen car equipped with a mechanical lift to enter the Apollon Gallery through a balcony next to the Seine River.
They used a disk to open the display cases where the jewelry was stored and stayed inside for four minutes. The escape was initially made on two scooters, before moving to cars and heading east. No one was threatened during the robbery.
Following the incident, security measures at French cultural institutions have been tightened. The Louvre has placed some of its most precious crowns at the Bank of France, in a secure vault 26 meters underground, to ensure their permanent protection.
