The long-awaited meeting between Trump and Zelensky took place at the White House on Friday, but Ukraine was not given the promised Tomahawk missiles. Instead, there was more pressure and Kremlin-like rhetoric from Trump's adviser.
According to media reports, Ukraine cannot expect a delivery of American Tomahawk missiles at the moment. US President Donald Trump refused to give Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky such approval during their meeting at the White House in Washington, according to reports from the website Axios and CNN, citing informed sources.
Russian attacks and the demand for Donetsk
Dead and wounded in Russian attacks in Donetsk region. At least two people have been killed in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region as a result of Russian air strikes. On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin is demanding Ukraine hand over Donetsk. According to a media report, the Kremlin chief, in his phone call with US President Donald Trump, demanded Ukraine cede the strategically important Donetsk region as a condition for ending Russia's war of aggression. In return, Moscow is said to be ready to give up parts of two other regions partially occupied by Russia, Zaporizhia and Kherson, the Washington Post reported, citing two people familiar with the contents of Thursday's call.
However, in Ukraine, there are considerable doubts whether Putin could have offered this. Before the summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska, Trump adviser Steve Witkoff allegedly misunderstood Russian negotiators. This also led to the failure of the Alaska summit. Therefore, a European diplomat quoted by the Washington Post does not believe that the Ukrainians would accept the alleged offer. "It's like selling them your leg and getting nothing in return," he said.
However, Trump adviser Steve Witkoff reportedly put fresh pressure on Ukraine on Friday to abandon Donetsk. He claimed that the region’s residents were Russian-speaking, a fact the Kremlin repeatedly cites. Russia has been trying to occupy the Donetsk region for 11 years. However, Ukrainian President Zelensky is himself a Russian-speaking citizen.
