Problems in the Middle East, Top American Commander discusses the Strait of

The Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), Admiral Brad Cooper, held a meeting with senior military leaders from Middle Eastern countries on Wednesday to discuss the current security situation in the region, with particular emphasis on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement from CENTCOM, the conference was attended by military representatives from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The parties discussed the current regional security environment and opportunities for strengthening cooperation in the field of defense.

"Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, and senior military officials from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen discussed the current regional security environment and opportunities for increased defense cooperation across the region. The leaders underscored their shared commitment to the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz ," CENTCOM said in a statement.

The meeting took place as Qatar-brokered talks to resolve the dispute between the United States and Iran continue. US Vice President JD Vance said the negotiations were "going well", although he added that it was "still too early" to draw conclusions.

CENTCOM also noted that this was the first time that military representatives from Syria and Lebanon participated in a US-led defense conference.

The meeting comes after Lebanon and Israel signed a US-brokered deal last week, seen as a first step towards a broader peace deal. However, Israel continued its strikes in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, saying it targeted a Hezbollah operative.
