Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned that Israel will escalate its military operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, a day after an airstrike killed four people.
Amid rising tensions along the border, Katz accused Hezbollah of 'playing with fire' and urged the Lebanese government to implement the disarmament agreement and expel the group from the south.
"The implementation of maximum measures will continue and even intensify, we will not allow a threat to the residents of the north," Katz said in a statement.
A ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel was reached in November 2024 with US mediation, after more than a year of conflict caused by the war in Gaza, but Israeli cross-border attacks continued from time to time.
Under the 2024 agreement that ended the more than year-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanon agreed that only state security forces would be allowed to carry weapons in the country, which assumes the complete disarmament of Hezbollah.
The US, Saudi Arabia and Hezbollah's rivals have pressured Lebanon to disarm the group. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has publicly agreed to the ceasefire, has not opposed the seizure of weapons in the south and has not attacked Israel since the November ceasefire.
However, he insists that the disarmament mentioned in the text of the agreement applies only to southern Lebanon and has hinted at a possible conflict if the state takes further steps against the group.
