The United States is prepared to resume strikes on Iran if current negotiations do not lead to an agreement, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Saturday.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Asia's leading security forum, Hegseth said the US military has the necessary capabilities and reserves to undertake new military operations if the situation requires it.
"We are more than capable of resuming operations if necessary. Our reserves are sufficient both regionally and globally ," he said.
His statements come at a time when American and Iranian negotiators are trying to overcome disagreements that continue to hinder reaching an agreement.
Hegseth also stressed that US engagement in the Middle East will not affect American presence and interests in the Asia-Pacific region.
"We can face several challenges simultaneously. We are strengthening our defense industrial base to significantly increase ammunition production and support our operations around the world ," he said.
According to the Pentagon chief, President Donald Trump remains committed to a diplomatic solution and aims for an agreement that guarantees that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons.
A day earlier, Trump announced that he would hold consultations at the White House to make a final decision on a proposal that would extend the current ceasefire with Iran for another 60 days, with the aim of creating the necessary space for a long-term agreement.
The conflict launched on February 28 by the US and Israel has caused thousands of casualties, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, as well as significant economic consequences in global energy markets, due to disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
