Keeping “lines open”; what to expect from the long-awaited
Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

The expected meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seen more as an attempt to keep tensions under control than as a step towards concrete solutions between the two countries.

According to estimates circulating in Greece, both sides have acknowledged that at this stage the objective is not to reach a broad political agreement. The priority remains avoiding a new crisis in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, at a time when escalation serves neither Athens nor Ankara.

The meeting is not expected to delve into high-level political issues. What differs from previous periods is the change in tone. Reducing confrontational rhetoric and maintaining active communication create a more manageable climate, without touching on the essence of the disagreements that remain unchanged.

In practice, the talks are expected to confirm the current reality: more functional communication channels, but no movement on fundamental positions. Maintaining “open lines” between the two leaders and continuing the Confidence Building Measures aim to prevent unforeseen incidents, especially in a broader context of geopolitical instability.

Energy in the Eastern Mediterranean remains the main test. The areas south of Crete concentrate important energy and geopolitical interests, making them the most sensitive point for new tensions.

At the same time, expanding economic cooperation is seen as a stabilizing factor. Increased trade also increases the cost of a new crisis for both countries, functioning as a deterrent mechanism.

The message that emerges from this meeting is clear and realistic: no one expects a solution, but no one seeks a clash. The meeting, the first since the two leaders met in New York in September 2024, will be held with the participation of foreign ministers and diplomatic teams, but without the presence of defense ministers. At this stage, success is measured only by maintaining stability.
