As negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the US are working towards peace in Abu Dhabi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is using a harsh tone against Germany and Europe.
Russian state news agency TASS reports that in an interview with RT on February 5, Lavrov leveled serious accusations against German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, statements that Western diplomats are likely to classify as a coordinated propaganda offensive.
According to Kremlin-linked reports, Russia's top diplomat claims that resistance to German "plans of domination" is growing within the European Union. TASS quotes Lavrov as saying: "There is growing opposition and a desire to prevent Germany from subjugating everyone else again." Lavrov offers no evidence for this claim.
This rhetoric follows a familiar pattern of Russian information warfare, fueling historical fears of German power and exacerbating divisions within the EU. Lavrov’s claims directly contradict the reality of the EU, where Germany often acts as a mediator.
Lavrov also makes the unfounded accusation that Chancellor Merz wants to systematically militarize Germany: "The 'Revival of Germany' is openly linked by Friedrich Merz and his government to militarization and preparation for war."
