Human error could have cost a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Brussels to Copenhagen dearly. The pilots stopped the plane just a few meters from the fuel storage area...
A serious air incident occurred on the evening of February 5 at Brussels Airport, when a Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) plane mistakenly attempted to take off from a runway not authorized for takeoff.
According to information reported by Aerospace Global News and local media, the flight had received clearance for takeoff from runway 07R. However, at around 22:03 local time, the aircraft lined up and began accelerating in the dark onto a parallel runway, identified as E1.
The plane, an Airbus A320neo, reached speeds of 107 knots (about 200 km/h), but the crew aborted the takeoff in time, making a hard and prolonged stop.
The aircraft came to rest on a grassy area near the runway and very close to the airport's fuel storage area. After coming to a stop, the aircraft was no longer able to move under its own power. Despite the seriousness of the incident, no injuries were reported among either the passengers or the crew; everyone disembarked safely.
Brussels Airport resumed normal operations after the incident. The SAS aircraft was then towed to a suitable area, while passengers of flight SK2590 were placed on alternative flights to Copenhagen.
A Scandinavian Airlines spokesperson confirmed the company's full cooperation with Belgian aviation authorities on the ongoing investigation.
According to preliminary data, the cause of the incident is related to an identification error, where the aircraft was lined up on a holding runway instead of the designated runway for take-off. Air safety experts emphasize that such cases, although rare, highlight the need for strict mutual checks, clear crew coordination and higher operational awareness, especially at night or in limited visibility conditions.
According to a daily specialized in aviation, the aircraft was not equipped with the RAAS (Runway Awareness and Advisory System), which increases the crew's situational awareness and is specifically designed to prevent incidents of this type.
