An operation conducted in Trakya by Greek police authorities has led to the arrest of two people and the seizure of an arsenal of weapons, which were suspected of being used to supply the Turkish mafia.
The operation was carried out by the Northern Greece Organized Crime Sub-Directorate, while a vehicle was blocked, where 25 firearms, pistols, unregistered and with erased serial numbers, were found.
The two arrested are accused of possession of weapons, while their actions are related to the illegal import and trafficking of weapons into the country.
During the operation, police officers stopped a car in which one of the arrested persons was travelling, who appeared to be acting as a transporter. A duffel bag containing 25 pistols, which were packed in transparent nylon bags, was found in the trunk of the vehicle.
Their weapons and magazines bore no manufacturer's marks or other identifying marks, making them "ghost weapons".
The preliminary investigation revealed the involvement of a second person, who was arrested with the assistance of the Prosecution Office and the Alexandroupoli Sub-Directorate of Investigation. The accused is suspected of having handed over the vehicle and weapons to the driver who was seen with the weapons.
During the searches, a total of 25 pistols, 25 magazines, five mobile phones and two SIM cards were seized, as well as the vehicle in which the weapons were being transported.
