NATO defense ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss the most pressing security issues on the European continent, with the war in Ukraine and new threats from drone strikes in the spotlight.

Also participating in this meeting is US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who, together with allies, has reaffirmed their commitment to collective defense and support for Ukraine.

"We will touch on all the issues and, of course, what happened recently, the drones, how to make sure that we can do even more to protect NATO also against these new threats. So this will be an important day," Rutte said.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed that the EU and NATO have separate but complementary roles. The EU provides economic influence and resources, while NATO guarantees military capacity.

"One of the issues we will discuss is the new program, where the United States is again providing military support to Ukraine, now $2 billion. Many other countries will participate. These are essential things to make sure that their civilian population, infrastructure is as protected as possible," Rutte said.

On the other hand, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that only a strong stance guarantees peace.

"If there's one thing we've learned from President Trump, it's the active pursuit of peace through strength. Peace is achieved when you're strong, not when you use strong words or move your finger. It's achieved when you have strong, real capabilities that your adversaries respect," Hegseth said.

NATO is expected to continue discussions on increasing defense capabilities in the region, at a time when threats are increasing significantly.
