The French Ministry of Culture has confirmed that one of the Louvre museum's most valuable jewels was among the objects stolen on Sunday morning in a spectacular theft. It is the large breast ribbon of Empress Eugénie, a unique piece of jewelry worth 6.72 million euros.

The jewel, made up of 2,634 diamonds and measuring 11 centimeters wide, was purchased by the museum in 2008 after decades in private ownership in the United States. The Louvre had included the object in one of its most prestigious collections, as part of the French imperial heritage.

The theft of this jewel, now officially confirmed, is one of the biggest blows to French cultural treasures and has shocked public opinion and the art world. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
