For Donald Trump, the ceasefire in Gaza is "still in effect." Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after his return from Mar-a-Lago, the US president also implied that the Hamas leadership was not involved in any alleged violations, blaming instead "some internal rebels."
"But in any case, the situation will be handled correctly. It will be handled harshly, but correctly," he said.
A day earlier, Israel carried out airstrikes in Gaza after accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire. According to an Israeli military official, the Islamist group targeted Israeli forces beyond the Yellow Line, where they have been relocated under the agreement agreed for the first phase of the Gaza peace plan.
Meanwhile, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to arrive in Israel today, while Vice President JD Vance will arrive in the country on Tuesday, a US official told the Times of Israel. The three will meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials during their visit to further promote Washington's Gaza ceasefire, the official added.
"Maintaining the ceasefire in Gaza will be complicated. There will be times when Hamas will open fire on Israel. Israel will have to respond, obviously. We still believe that these are the best chances for a lasting peace, but there will be ups and downs and we will have to monitor the situation," Vance stressed.
