A team of NASA researchers, in collaboration with Toho University in Japan, used supercomputers to assess the long-term stability of the Earth.
Their simulations show that life on our planet, both human and microbial, will face major challenges.
The study, titled "The Future Lifespan of Earth's Oxygenated Atmosphere," estimates that in about 1 billion years, oxygen levels will have dropped so much that any organisms that depend on it will become extinct.
Scientists explain that the atmosphere will thin, surface temperatures will become extreme, and the oceans will have largely evaporated.
Despite these extreme scenarios, human life is expected to be affected much sooner. The combined effect of increased solar activity with anthropogenic climate change, rising temperatures, melting glaciers and air pollution, will make the planet increasingly less hospitable.
"The Sun's brightness is constantly increasing, and this is affecting the habitability of the Earth. The latest models show that the period during which the Earth will remain habitable is almost half of previous estimates," emphasizes Kazumi Osaki, the head of the study.
