The Israeli military has said it will resume enforcing a ceasefire in Gaza, after launching airstrikes on Sunday in response to what it called a "flagrant violation" of the agreement by Hamas.
The attacks began in southern Gaza after the Israeli military said "terrorists fired an anti-tank rocket and then there was gunfire" towards its troops in Rafah, killing two soldiers.
Hamas said it was "not aware" of any clashes in the area under Israeli control.
In the evening, Israel said it had struck Hamas targets across Gaza, with hospital sources saying 44 people were killed.
Hamas had said it was committed to the ceasefire, but accused Israel of violations and warned that the attacks could "push the situation towards total collapse."
After 9:00 p.m. local time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they had "begun renewed implementation of the ceasefire," adding that they would uphold the agreement and "respond decisively to any violation of it."
The statement did not directly specify whether a previous announcement to suspend aid entering Gaza had also been canceled.
Speaking to reporters as he arrived in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Trump said the ceasefire was still in effect. He added that Hamas had been "rampant and fired several times," but that there may be "some rebels inside" the armed group.
"However, it will be dealt with properly. Harshly, but properly," he added.
The first phase of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement, which began on October 10, saw an immediate end to fighting, the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops to the so-called yellow line along the north, east and south of Gaza, and an increase in aid.
Hamas has released all live hostages, as well as the remains of 12 of the 28 dead.
Israel has released 250 Palestinian prisoners from its jails and 1,718 detainees from Gaza, as well as returned 15 Palestinian bodies in exchange for the mortal remains of each Israeli hostage.
The deal was put to the test on Sunday, as Gaza suffered its worst day of violence since US President Donald Trump gathered world leaders in Egypt last week under a banner proclaiming "Peace in the Middle East."
American pressure is now needed to keep this ceasefire agreement on track, and to that end, Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner will visit Israel soon.
