The U.S. Secret Service has discovered a suspicious “hunting lodge”-type structure near Palm Beach International Airport, in the area directly overlooking the runway where Air Force One lands, officials said Friday. The structure was identified during standard security checks conducted before every presidential arrival in Florida.
Authorities said no one was found at the scene and there was no impact on the President's movements. "No one was found at the scene and there was no impact on the President's movements," said Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, stressing that the incident highlights the importance of the multifaceted presidential security protocols.
The FBI has taken over the investigation, while federal teams are analyzing evidence and using technology to identify anyone who may have been involved or who built the structure. According to authorities, shelters of this type — raised or hidden platforms — are commonly used by hunters to get a clearer view of an area, but the orientation of the structure towards the presidential jet's landing strip has raised serious suspicions of other purposes.
Sources said the structure may have been set up months ago, making it more difficult to determine the perpetrators and motive. The investigation is intensifying at a time when US authorities have been on high alert for several incidents related to threats against the President: in recent months there was a case where Ryan Routh was found guilty of attempting to assassinate the President at a golf course in Palm Beach, where according to the indictment he had set up a sniper position near the fence; earlier, the President was shot in the ear during an electoral rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Officials are now investigating whether there is a connection between the incident discovered near the airport and these previous incidents, as well as whether the structure was indeed a real hunting lodge or a purpose-built position set up to track or attack the presidential movements. For now, the FBI investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to release new information as the results of forensic analysis and field investigations are processed.
