British police said on Sunday that a stabbing attack on a London-bound train was not being treated as a terrorist incident and that two British men had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Ten people were injured in the attack on the train travelling between Doncaster, a town in northeast England, and London - a normally busy line - on Saturday evening.
Officer John Loveless said that of the nine people who were treated for serious injuries on Saturday, four have been released from the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition.
"The counter-terrorism unit was initially supporting our investigation. However, at this stage, there is nothing to suggest that this is a terrorist incident," Loveless said at a press conference.
He added that the arrested persons are a 32-year-old British citizen of African origin and a 35-year-old British citizen of Caribbean origin.
Witnesses on the train described scenes of chaos and horror as an attacker with a large knife shot at passengers.
The motive for this knife attack is still unknown.
The police and the government have called on citizens not to speculate about the perpetrators or reasons for the attack.
Defence Minister John Healey said on Sunday that the initial assessment is that the incident was an "isolated attack".
"So there's no reason why the rest of us shouldn't continue with our normal lives, travel where we need to," Healey told Sky News.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident "horrific" and "deeply disturbing."
Knife crime in England and Wales has increased since 2011, according to official government data.
While Britain has some of the strictest gun laws in the world, the wave of knife violence has been called a "national crisis" by Starmer.
His Labour government has made efforts to curb them.
Nearly 60,000 knives have been "confiscated or surrendered" in England and Wales as part of the Government's efforts to halve knife crime within a decade, the Home Office said on Wednesday.
A series of other high-profile attacks have rocked the country over the past year, including the murder of three girls at a dance class in Southport in July 2024 - one of the worst knife attacks in years./ REL
