Knife attack on train in Britain, at least 9 seriously injured

At least nine people have been seriously injured and are in a life-threatening condition after a knife attack on a train in Cambridgeshire.

'This is a shocking incident,' said British Transport Police. Chris Casey, the chief inspector, called the stabbing a "shocking incident" but said he was unable to speculate on the cause.

The train was travelling from Doncaster to King's Cross when a man with a knife began attacking passengers.

One of the passengers shouted 'someone has a knife'.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has asked passengers to postpone train travel and says disruptions are expected until the end of the day on Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday morning, LNER Managing Director David Horne wrote that he was "deeply shocked and saddened by this serious incident" and thanked the emergency services for their "swift and professional" response.

"We will continue to do everything we can to support our passengers and colleagues during this difficult time," he said, reiterating that the well-being of all those affected will remain his top priority.

Passengers told Sky News that the stabbing attack began 10 minutes after the train left Peterborough and that the injured were seen running through the train away from someone with a knife.

A man carrying a large knife was later seen on the train platform as armed police pointed their guns at him, a witness said, adding that the assailant was tased and tied up.

According to testimony from the scene, during the attack on the train, an elderly man 'blocked' the attacker from hitting a younger girl.

Olly Foster told the BBC that he initially heard people shouting "run, run, a guy is attacking with a knife." It was initially thought to be a prank on the night after Halloween.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The investigation is being supported by counter-terrorism officers and police say trains are still not running in the area. There are also a number of road closures that remain in place.

The identities of the two people arrested in connection with the attack have not been released.
