Explosive attack on Ranucci, investigations continue; Prosecution receives

The investigation into the attack on Sigfrido Ranucci continues. The Rome prosecutor's office has requested the publication of the journalist's hearing before the Anti-Mafia Commission on November 4.

The prosecutor's office is particularly interested in the part (about an hour long) that Ranucci requested not to be broadcast and kept secret after a question asked by former magistrate and Five Star Movement senator Roberto Scarpinato regarding Undersecretary Giovanbattista Fazzolari.

"After an episode of "Report" involving Prime Minister Meloni, you stated that you were wiretapped at the request of Undersecretary Fazzolari: can you tell us more about this episode and help us understand if there could be any connection to what happened to him?," Scarpinato asked.

This part of the hearing has not been made public at this time and only the prosecutor's office will be able to have it available.

Fazzolari has denied any such accusations and in an interview with Corriere della Sera stated that the prosecutor's office "is doing everything possible to identify, as soon as possible, those responsible for such a serious act" because "it is clear that someone is trying to exploit this disgusting episode to attack the government, making it a political issue at all costs."

For his part, Scarpinato insists on his accusations and defends himself in La Stampa, claiming that he asked the question "to understand whether he later confirmed that the news was unfounded, or whether he confirmed it in whole or in part".

In the interview, he avoids the direct question of whether he believes there is a connection between the attack on Ranuccitt on October 16 and the involvement of the secret services, stating that "despite the attack, the fact that the secret services are collecting information on Ranucci's activities cannot be considered insignificant."

Scarpinato says he sees "serious political responsibilities surrounding the press and the independent judiciary, which, despite their different roles, have in common the task of exposing the inappropriate and unspeakable secrets of power". And according to him, there are "journalists who have carried out unwanted investigations for ruling parties and who have been subjected to illegal wiretapping by individuals who remain untraceable ghosts".
