Robbers attack Louvre in Paris, steal Napoleon's jewels

According to the French Minister of Culture, a robbery occurred at the world-famous Louvre museum in Paris on Sunday.

"This morning, a robbery occurred at the opening of the Louvre Museum," said Culture Minister Rachida Dati.

"Le Parisien" writes that the masked perpetrators arrived on scooters and entered the building via a freight elevator, breaking several windows and stealing jewelry. The jewelry allegedly belonged to the French emperor Napoleon and his wife. The perpetrators are on the run.

According to "Le Parisien", the stolen items reportedly include necklaces, brooches, a tiara and other jewelry.

However, the giant "Regent" diamond, which is also kept there, was not stolen.

Initially, the culture minister did not provide further details about the incident or what exactly was stolen. According to the museum, the Louvre will remain closed for the day "for exceptional reasons."

"The investigation is ongoing," Dati continued. One or more perpetrators had entered the museum, according to sources close to the minister, who told the AFP news agency.

The Louvre is one of the most famous attractions in the French capital.
