Weapons and ammunition found at the world's most famous Christmas market

Amid the Christmas buzz in Strasbourg, gardeners made a disturbing discovery: in a flower pot not far from the famous Christmas market, they found an automatic pistol with ammunition.

The weapon was hidden in Impasse de la Grande-Écluse, just a few steps from the "Advent Village", an area specially designed for children.

The Strasbourg Christmas market stretches across the entire old town: during Advent, the streets are usually filled with tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

The Strasbourg public prosecutor's office confirmed the discovery and immediately launched an investigation. Prosecutor Clarisse Taron transferred the investigation to the Strasbourg criminal police.

Initial findings indicate that the pistol was stolen from the home of a sports shooter in Upper Alsace in 2022. Investigators now aim to use video footage and DNA evidence to determine whether the weapon was left there before or after the Christmas market opened. However, the DNA evidence may have been compromised by the high humidity of recent weeks.

More than 200 to 300 police officers are on duty every day to ensure the safety of visitors. The Strasbourg Christmas Market attracts several million people from all over the world every year, especially from Germany.

The discovery of the weapons brings back painful memories of the terrorist attack on December 11, 2018. On that day, a 29-year-old man killed five people at a Christmas market with a knife and a revolver. Since then, the market has been under increased police surveillance. Security measures at Christmas markets in Germany have also been significantly increased in most areas.

Investigators are now working to clarify all the circumstances surrounding the latest discovery of weapons. Whether the discovery is related to the Christmas market or has other motives remains unclear at the moment.

Organizers in Strasbourg, however, do not want to "panic" and will maintain existing security measures, as reported by Le Parisien. On Saturday, the famous Christmas market, which CNN Travel considers one of the "most beautiful in the world", was packed.
