Four people died in a shooting at a family party in Stockton, Northern California, on Saturday night, police said.

The shooting occurred at a child's birthday party, Stockton Deputy Mayor Jason Lee said in a Facebook post.

"I am in contact with staff and public safety officials to understand exactly what happened and will seek answers," he said.

Police said they received reports of gunfire shortly before 6 p.m. local time near the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue in Stockton. Several of the victims and injured were transported to local hospitals, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Heather Brent said she had limited information to share with the public on the shooting, but confirmed that four people are dead.

The incident was reported at a banquet hall where a family was celebrating inside the building. During the celebrations, gunfire erupted and 14 people were shot, four of whom died. The victims range in age from "juveniles to adults," according to Brent. Early indications suggest this may be a "targeted incident," Brent said during a press conference Saturday evening.

"This is a very active and ongoing investigation," Brent said. "Information remains very limited at this time."

Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.

"Our number 1 priority right now is identifying this suspect," Brent said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom's office released a statement on social media late Saturday night. The governor said he was informed of the "horrific shooting" in Stockton.

"The Governor's Office of Emergency Services is monitoring this developing situation and coordinating with local law enforcement," Newsom said.
