The Serbian president said that the trip was organized by people close to him to make his stay in Tivat more pleasant, while denying claims of destabilization and minimizing the diplomatic incident with Podgorica.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated in Tivat that the charter flight with supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), who were denied entry to the country by Montenegrin authorities, was organized by people close to him who wanted to make his stay in Montenegro more pleasant, but he described this action as a "big political mistake."
After arriving in Tivat for the EU-Western Balkans Summit, Vučić said that his associates had wanted to create a better atmosphere for him during the visit.
" They wanted to provide me with a more pleasant environment, something that would make me happy, but this turned out to be a big political mistake ," the Serbian president said.
He added that of the 87 people returned to Serbia, only five had criminal records.
" This is a lower average than on a regular flight or even on a bus ," Vučić said.
Asked who had organized the controversial flight, he refused to give names, saying it was an internal party matter.
" No one had bad intentions, but in the end it is I who will pay the political price through no fault of my own ," he declared.
Vučić rejected claims by Montenegrin authorities that the returned group had destabilizing intentions.
" The stories about destabilization are nonsense. They have not committed any criminal offense. Don't add things that did not happen. They did not come armed. They had no weapons, nothing offensive or inappropriate. For me, the 'Serbia wins' banner is a beautiful message ," he said.
The Serbian president criticized the media for publishing personal data of deported people, whom Montenegrin services described as persons of interest to security.
According to him, the goal was to present Serbia as a destabilizing factor in the region.
He added that Montenegrin authorities could have avoided the diplomatic incident if they had contacted him directly to discuss the problem.
Commenting on the claims of a threat to his security during his visit to Montenegro, Vučić said that for years there has been information that criminal groups have been planning an assassination attempt on him.
" You've seen it in the communications provided by the Sky app. The leaders of the criminal clans from Montenegro have long demanded that someone be paid to kill me. There's nothing new here ," he declared.
According to Vučić, behind these plans are leaders of Montenegrin criminal clans, including people previously mentioned in investigations by Serbian authorities.
He also acknowledged that political relations between Belgrade and Podgorica are tense.
" When there are political tensions, often unnecessary, between Podgorica and Belgrade, each side tries to blame the other. We should all be more rational and careful. But when the accusations start, then there is no end. While the criminals will do their job, because this is their profession ," Vučić said.
However, he praised the reaction of the Serbian community in Montenegro to his visit and said that Serbia will continue to build friendly relations with its citizens there, despite what he called a “hybrid war” by the political and media establishment in Podgorica.
